Experience Online Home & Community Shopping
If you’re in the market to buy a home it’s likely that you’re spending a lot of time online right now searching for the one. Thanks, in part to the pandemic, virtual tours and open houses for homes are now commonplace. But what about the neighborhood or community around the home you have your eye on? How can you research a community from the comfort of your couch?
Experiencing a neighborhood or community as we’re under a stay at home order is a little more challenging, but still doable. And, if you’re relocating to the area and can’t travel to do your in-person research, we’re here to help!
Here are 7 Ways To Virtually Explore & Experience A Community:
1 – Check out local social media groups specific to the area
The best way to get insider knowledge for any community is to learn from those already living there. Browse social media platforms for groups or accounts that document and discuss what’s going on in the neighborhood you’re interested in moving to. While many eateries and businesses are currently in takeout-only mode, you can leverage groups to ask locals about local coffee shops, restaurants, brewpubs, and shopping, etc., you should experience post-pandemic. And for now, please support our local businesses as you’re able to! Takeout, delivery, and online shopping options are plentiful and delicious and offer a great way to try out a new-to-you eatery or store while supporting our local businesses during these extraordinary times.
Locally, we love these social media resources:
Facebook Groups & Pages:
- I Love Bend, OR
- What’s Really Happening In La Pine
- City of Prineville
- Redmond Oregon
- Sisters Community Updates & News
- Sunriver Owners Association
Search platforms using these hashtags as a guide for local content, pages, profiles, and info:

2 – Tour using Google street view
Google Street View – a feature of Google Maps – allows you to virtually stroll through a neighborhood and down a specific street and navigate through a 360 degree horizontal and 290 degree vertical panoramic street-level image of almost anywhere in the world.
Every home for sale on our website has a Google Street view built-in so you can not only see the property details, photos, and virtual/video tour for the home itself but also you can street view and tour the neighborhood, too.
3 – Browse websites and apps with neighborhood data
We’ve built robust community pages into our website to offer the most information at-a-glance. Each community page showcases quick facts, maps, photos, area highlights, metrics, facts, market trends, schools info, businesses, restaurants, activities, and homes for sale.
Our free FRED mobile app features the industry’s leading search service with smart filter features such as commute time estimates, school district boundaries, zip code boundaries, and much more.
4 – Investigate schools and educational data
National portals such as GreatSchools provides data on K-12 schools along with reviews from parents. To research education statistics, U.S. News & World Report has rankings of high schools with data on more than 23,000 public high schools in all 50 states.
Local school districts include:
5 – Check crime and safety ratings
Websites such as CrimeReports can provide crime data from law enforcement agencies. To see if there are registered sex offenders living nearby, type the address of your potential new home in the National Sex Offender Registry’s public website.
Locally, the websites for the Sheriff’s office in each county offers great information for crime rates and prevention in the community:
6 – Estimate and understand your daily commute
Depending on your mode of transportation, understanding the distance and commute time is a big factor in deciding where to purchase a home. Our free FRED mobile app has built-in smart filters to help estimate your commute time (biking, walking, driving times) or you can use commuting tools that predict traffic like Waze and Google Maps, or if you prefer to go by foot, check out WalkScore.
7 – Connect and work with a local real estate professional
