Bend, Oregon is Beertown, USA
Bend is among the best cities for beer drinkers, famous for its delicious and local craft beers and over 22 breweries in town, with over 33 throughout the Central Oregon region.
As summer starts to heat up, typically we’d be enjoying one festival after another, but this year looks a little different in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and large gatherings not permitted. So while we may not be able to enjoy Bend Brewfest in-person in 2020, or get together on a grand scale, summer in Bend is awesome and we can’t think of a better way to chill out in the heat, or wrap up a day of outdoor adventures, than with a cold local brew in hand.
Here are 5 ways to enjoy local craft beer and support our breweries and pubs right now:
1. Hit the trail
Trek the largest beer trail in the west, the Bend Ale Trail.
If you’ve never experienced the Bend Ale Trail, this is a great chance to visit a brewery or two or five that you may not have tried. If you are a Bend Ale Trail Champion with many trophies under your belt, you will want to check out the six breweries that are new to the Trail. Get the official BAT rules and passport information from Visit Bend here.
This year’s special edition trail means you’ll need to print out a trail passport (download available here) and bring it with you as you visit breweries and receive your passport stamps. Visit five breweries on the passport, take a selfie (holding your stamped passport), and email to Visit Bend to receive a prize.
2. Go on tour
Outdoor adventures, beautiful scenery, and beer? Central Oregon’s got you covered.
Paddle Central Oregon’s most iconic river on the Deschutes River Brews and Views Tour with Wanderlust Tours. Experience the pristine Deschutes River with a naturalist guide, taste various beers from Cascade Lakes Brewing Company and other local breweries, and hear the story of their crafting. Read more about this tour and Wanderlust Tour’s COVID-19 updates here.
Or, ride the trails and drink some delicious beer on a single day Bike and Brew Tour with Cog Wild. Now offering a fully customizable experience on Bend singletrack with a Deschutes Brewery tour to cool your jets after all is said and done. Read more about this tour and Cog Wild’s COVID-19 tour guidelines here.
3. Enjoy a sweet ride
The Cycle Pub is often seen cruising the streets of Bend, and this summer is no exception. A non-traditional bike, where you sit and pedal in a non-traditional way, and enjoy an amazing tour of Bend along the way. Our best description, it’s a rolling pub on wheels, that you pedal! Learn more about available dates and book your Cycle Pub tour here.
Tuk and Roll your way to local breweries, brew pubs, and businesses with a private tour on the westside of town. New for 2020, and in response to the COVID impact on small businesses, pick one local non-brewery to visit and support during your private tour. As you’re enjoying the sights and tasting some local beers, this *extra* stop will mean so much to these small business business owners! Learn more about tour availability and make a reservation here.
4. Order delivery
Stock up your fridge at home and support local.
Several breweries are now offering beer to go pickup and delivery services so you can continue to support local businesses by buying directly from our breweries and pubs to help keep them going. Click here to see where you can get beer – pick up or delivery and as Oregon slowly reopens, make sure you check for updates (and delivery boundaries) at each brewery’s website and/or Facebook page.
Or, host your own Brewfest at home. Silver Moon Brewing’s “Take-Home” Brewfest is here to salvage the celebration and community engagement that has been limited over the last few months. A total of 18 different Central Oregon craft breweries/cideries have come together to make this possible. Consumers have the opportunity to purchase a full mixed 18 pack, one amazing, mainly limited edition product from each brewery. You are then able to take this mixed case home and host your own Brewfest in the comfort and safety of your home or backyard. Learn more about this uniquely delicious event here.
5. Get outside
Enjoy fresh air, beer with friends, and even live music!
Beer gardens, taprooms, and food cart lots are reopening with modified hours and physical distancing measures in place. Some of our favorite places to enjoy a brew outside:
- Bend Brewing Co.
- Crux Fermentation Project
- Goodlife Brewing Company
- On Tap
- Rivers Place Tap House & Food Cart Yard
- Worthy Brewing
Before you go, check their website or call ahead to verify safety guidelines and status.
